- Knife pouch
One of the most important pieces of equipment that form the police gear that a cop must always carry is either a knife, or a multi-tool. The knife is not only to be used for self-defense but also as a tool for the cutting of various objects. For example, a car seat belt which an officer may have to quickly cut.
A multi-tool can be used in a few different situations, depending on its design. It may be used as a knife and can also be used in the assembling or disassembling of various items on the field, to facilitate their repair. Officers may also choose to carry a window-punch which is a small metal point on the end of a hammer-type handle, which the officer can use to break a window either to access a car or a residence. It is necessary that in the use and carrying of this tool that the tool is not left exposed, left dangling or in a position or place that is not easily accessible. This is where the knife pouch comes in.
- Police duty belt
A police duty belt also known as a gun belt or duty rig. This a tool in the police gear constructed of nylon or leather used to carry equipment easily in a series of pouches (knife pouch, baton pouch, flashlight pouch etc.) attached to the belt, in a readily-accessible manner, leaving the hands free to interact. This belt can carry any number of useful items.
- Magazine pouch
Spare magazines or speed loaders are used to reload a gun. Magazines can be carried in a vertical or horizontal position. The advantage of carriage in a vertical, upright position is that the magazine occupies less space on the belt allowing more magazines to be carried. The advantage of horizontal carry is comfort, and magazines are in a position that makes it easier for an officer to retrieve and load them into the handgun.
